History
The study of history fires our curiosity about the past.  We consider how the past influences the present, what past societies were like and how they organised themselves.  As we do this, we build up a chronological framework of knowledge about significant events and people.  We study the diversity of human experience and build up an understanding of ourselves as individuals and the society we live.

The experience of learning history at Dartmouth Community College is not about cramming the mind full of facts and learning dates and Kings and Queens off by heart.  Students are encouraged and taught how to study history for themselves through the development of research and recording skills.  Then to come to their own conclusions based upon the evidence they have considered.

We have developed a rich history curriclum at the college.  Topics range from the studying the experiences of medieval Crusaders to the events of Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland.  In additon, we also develop national and local projects to enrich the students' experiences.  We are currently planning a community led local history project that commemorates local dignatory John Hauley (some say Hawley) who died six hundred years ago.  Last year we successfully worked with Blackawton primary school on a Slave Trade Project that brought in aspects of the bi - centenary events at national level to mark the end of the trans - Atlantic Slave Trade.
